Why Permata Studies

Education that takes your experience seriously.

The advantages of studying with Permata Studies are not abstract claims. They are specific choices about how we design curricula, select faculty, manage enrolment, and protect our independence — each of which directly affects what participants get from the time they spend here.

What Sets Us Apart

Six characteristics that distinguish the experience at Permata Studies from what is available elsewhere.

Practitioners, not lecturers

Every programme is led by someone who has worked professionally in the field they are teaching, not only studied or lectured about it.

Financially independent

No affiliations with banks, insurers, or product providers. The curriculum is shaped entirely by what is educationally useful.

Controlled cohort sizes

Enrolment is capped to allow real discussion. You are not in a hall with sixty strangers; you are in a room where questions are taken seriously.

Malaysian context throughout

EPF, ASB, Bursa-listed instruments, local unit trust structures — the curriculum works with what is actually available to participants, not with a generic international framework.

Designed for this stage of life

Content addresses the decisions people actually face in their forties, fifties, and sixties. We do not teach introductory concepts to experienced adults.

Written materials included

Printed course notes, reading lists, and — for the Evening Lecture — a written summary sent before the session. What is taught stays with you.

In Depth

Professional Expertise

The Permata Studies faculty is not assembled from career academics who have studied financial markets as observers. Each member has held professional roles — portfolio management, licensed financial planning, economic policy work — before taking on teaching responsibilities here. This matters in practice because the examples used in class are drawn from real decisions, real instruments, and real consequences rather than from textbook hypotheticals.

  • Combined practice experience exceeds four decades across three subject areas
  • Faculty maintain active links with the professional fields they teach
  • Curriculum is reviewed before each intake in light of current market and regulatory conditions

Structured Curriculum

Each programme has a clearly defined scope. The Substantive Investing Programme runs fourteen weeks and builds from portfolio theory through to the practical question of when and how to engage a professional adviser. The Late-Career Planning Course addresses six defined topics across six sessions. The Evening Lecture covers a single subject per session with a written summary distributed in advance so that participants can follow the argument as it unfolds.

  • Pre-enrolment prospectus describes each session's content and learning objectives
  • Sequential structure means each session builds on what preceded it
  • Programme materials are reviewed and updated for each new intake

Participant Experience

Because cohorts are small, participants are not anonymous. Questions asked during sessions are answered properly, not deferred or given a brief acknowledgment before the lecture moves on. The institute's office is available by telephone and email for administrative matters. We do not have an automated phone system. When you call, a person answers.

  • Enrolment limited so questions can be properly addressed in session
  • Telephone and email enquiries responded to within two working days
  • Deferral and withdrawal enquiries are handled individually

Transparent Pricing

Programme fees are stated clearly in the prospectus and are inclusive of all course materials. There are no hidden costs, no required product purchases, and no upgrade paths. The Evening Lecture at MYR 470 includes the written summary distributed in advance. The Late-Career Planning Course at MYR 1,290 and the Substantive Investing Programme at MYR 2,300 both include printed course notes and the reading list. What you pay for is what you get.

  • All materials included in stated fee — no additional purchases required
  • Fees stated in Malaysian Ringgit with no hidden charges
  • Deferral and refund terms stated before enrolment is completed

Realistic Outcomes

We are precise about what participants leave with. After the Substantive Investing Programme, participants have a working understanding of portfolio theory, the mechanics of Malaysian fixed-income instruments, how unit trusts and ETFs are structured, and a framework for deciding when professional advice adds value. They do not leave with a professional qualification. They leave with the knowledge required to ask better questions and make more considered household financial decisions — which is what the programme sets out to provide.

  • Outcome descriptions are written into the prospectus, not added as marketing copy
  • Certificates of attendance issued on programme completion
  • More than 1,200 participants since 2011 — word of mouth has been our primary source of new enrolments

Distinctive Features

Characteristics of Permata Studies that are not commonly found in available alternatives.

No Product Sales, Ever

No programme ends with a product recommendation or a referral to a financial services provider affiliated with the institute. When faculty discuss specific instruments, they do so as teaching examples. The decision to act on anything discussed in class belongs entirely to the participant.

Pre-Session Written Summary

For the Evening Lecture, participants receive a written summary of the session's subject and argument before the evening begins. This is unusual in public lecture series and reflects our view that participants engage more productively when they arrive oriented rather than blank.

Annual Curriculum Review

Each programme's curriculum is reviewed before every new intake by the responsible faculty member, in light of regulatory changes, new product structures, and questions raised by previous cohorts. Participants do not receive outdated material reprinted from five years ago.

Deferral Without Penalty

Participants who notify us at least fourteen days before the programme begins may defer their enrolment to the next intake without any charge. We recognise that the circumstances of adults with full professional and family lives can shift in ways that are not always predictable at the point of enrolment.

In Numbers

A record built over fourteen years, one intake at a time.
